look one:
Look one started by looking at the first two countries I have lived in. Cambodia and Tanzania were complete opposites, but in both my family and I were completely isolated. In Cambodia we lived in a very small town, where no one spoke English and we lived in a wooden house.
For the top in specific I looked at the house in Cambodia as my my main source of inspiration as it is where I spent most of my time. I was especially interested in the shape and material. The shape linked to what I had in mind for the top, I wanted a very restricted top that not allow a lot of movement. I wanted the arms to be closed, showing that even if we wanted to reach for ‘home’ it was impossible and we were so new to moving as it was our first time. The house was fully built with natural fibres and this was something I wanted to bring into this piece as well.
I wanted the skirt to be very hand made and beautiful. Tanzania was my family and I’s first move out of South Africa and to go from a normal city life to life in a national park was beautiful. I can’t remember much except for the insane beauty that I literally lived in. Our house was on the top of a crater and we looked over the national park. The trees in particular were something that I loved, because it looked like my braided hair as a little girl.
This look was made out of fully sustainable and recycled materials.
